Our students are encouraged to see physical fitness and the practice of a healthy lifestyle as a goal for now and the future. With classes that meet three times a week in PK – Grade 5, we provide our students with a quality and age-appropriate PE program that fosters skills to build on. In the early grades, we develop locomotor skills through a variety of activities that emphasize movement concepts, manipulative skills, and small group games in a safe and non-competitive environment.

Starting in Grade 3, our program helps students further develop their soccer, track and field, floor hockey, volleyball, badminton, handball, basketball, lacrosse, tennis, and softball skills. Our curriculum’s emphasis on social-emotional learning builds lifelong skills that students use in class and beyond the school day.

Our graduated approach allows students to progress to a more sophisticated level of play and to build athletic skills as they become more physically and emotionally mature. By preparing students with the skills needed for a wide variety of sports and activities, we instill in them a love of physical activity that lasts a lifetime. Learn more about our commitment to Health and Wellness.

Grade 4 and 5 students have the opportunity to join our after-school sports program consisting of an interscholastic soccer program in the fall, interscholastic basketball program in the winter, and instructional running club in the spring.

Our Middle School athletics program focuses on teaching the fundamentals, while emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork. Every day is an opportunity to do something good for yourself, whether that is skill development that prepares you for higher-level competition or discovering a healthy activity you can enjoy for the rest of your life. Sports give all students an opportunity to put our Core Values— Respect, Responsibility, Kindness, Honesty, and Equity—into action.

Sixth graders have the option, but are not required to play interscholastic sports. Seventh and eighth graders must play a minimum of one season of a team sport. If you play only one season of a team sport, you must choose an activity for the other two seasons. If you play two seasons of a team sport, you can take one season off.

At the junior varsity level, we emphasize learning the fundamentals and giving everybody the chance to apply them in games. At the varsity level, we value competitive intensity, execution, and the kind of teamwork that makes a squad better than the sum of its parts.

At every level, Brimmer values sportsmanship above all, but we are always looking for a good win! Upper School students are required to play at least one season of interscholastic sports. In off-seasons, upper school students continue to be active by participating in recreational offerings such as golf, fitness, skiing, or yoga.
